Looking for an online course about China, Korea and Japan for professional development in the content area of either history or literature? Take “Teaching East Asia” (EALC/HIST 747) at home for two hours of undergraduate or graduate credit in your pajamas if you like! This ADA-compliant online course is available through an independent study program from Continuing Education at the University of Kansas.
This course is based on the work of Bill Tsutsui and Nancy Hope with the Kansas Consortium for Teaching about Asia and was especially created for K-12 educators. Extensive course materials are available in streaming audio, video and text formats, with presentations by several East Asian specialists from the University of Kansas, and prominent national scholars. (Please note that the online course can not be audited and the benefits given to participants in the face-to-face seminars are not available.)
You can preview the first lesson on “Why Study East Asia,” “Creating Effective Lesson Plans,” and “Using Primary Sources” for free at http://www.kuce.org/isc/previews/747preview/index.html. Many teachers have asked about educational materials that support the teaching of East Asia in the K-12 curriculum across a variety of subject areas, so also look at the recommended “Resources” there by clicking the sidebar link.
